Fully-functional 3d printed “Made in Space” wrench from NASA

The first (non-sample) object I printed on my newly-acquired 3d printer after Christmas was NASA’s “Made in Space” 3d printable wrench. While this was not the first object 3d printed in space, it was the first designed expressly to meet the needs of an astronaut. [Read more…]

NASA’s First Launch Tweetup (STS-129) – 5 Year Anniversary

STS-129 CrewFive years ago today, I flew to Florida to witness my first space launch, the liftoff of Space Shuttle Atlantis on mission STS-129. Aboard the Shuttle were NASA astronauts Charlie Hobaugh (“Scorch”), Butch Wilmore, Leland Melvin (@Astro_Flow), Randy Bresnik, Michael Foreman (@foreman_mike), and Robert Satcher (@Astro_Bones). The trip, made possible by NASA’s tweetup program (which began in January 2009 and continues today under the name NASA Social), fulfilled my lifelong dream of witnessing a Shuttle launch with my own eyes. The experience also reignited my love of space exploration and human spaceflight, and made me want to actively nurture that interest in others. I will be forever grateful to NASA and the NASA Social program for the opportunities they have given me. [Read more…]

AP Radio News Interview with Jon Belmont

This is my AP Radio News interview with Jon Belmont the morning of STS-129’s launch. I couldn’t sleep, and Jon tweeted a request for interviews. I can’t remember if he was specifically looking for NASATweetup attendees or just folks on Twitter who would be at the launch, but I was both — STS-129 was my first launch, and my first NASA Tweetup/Social.
